Hi, I'm looking for a song which my mother would sing (she is no more now). All that I can remember is this line "nee maathram engu poyee". It should be an old film song, more than 30 years old and just this line resembles Simhendramadhyamam. I know it is almost impossible.

I haven't come across 'bhashanga swara' in music theory.

I think you mean bhashanga raga, which is a term denoting any foreign note in a janya raga that is not found in the parent raga. Such notes are called 'anya swara'. Any raga taking one or more anya swaras is termed bhashanga raga.

The ghana panchaka ragas are:Nata, Arabhi, Gaula, Varali and Sree

Saint Thyagaraja has composed pancharatna keerthana's in these ragas.

1.Jagadaanandakaaraka-Nata
2.Saadhinchane-Arabhi
3.Dudukugala-Gaula
4.Kanakanaruchira-Varali
5.Entaro mahaanubhaavulu-Sree

Hope this site becomes more useful, in terms of language. It would be best, if it is in english or hindi to attract more from carnatic community.

This a real good site, esp since we have very few sites in Malayalam dedicated to carnaatic raagas in film songs. This will definitely form a good starting point for the common man to develop interest in carnatic music.

Silayaay pirannirunnenkil njan : I beleive with all the probity that the classification of different songs into raagas Abheri and Bheempalas is irrational sine the only difference between these is that while the former is a Hindusthani raag, the later one is it's Carnatic counterpart. It is indeed a good site.. I liked it.. But it seems sometimes very difficult to browse some pages especially this feed back page.. It always shows as "login first".. Life history of Maharajah Swati Thirunal as also his compositions should be included for more popularity..There should be interesting article on Kerala Conmposers like, KC Kesava Pillai, Irayimman Thambi, Thulaseevanam etc., etc. With best wishes..

The song 'aliveni enthu cheyvu' composed by maharaja swathithirunal is in the raga kurinji, a nishadantya raga having it's routes in sankarabharanam.I am not sure whether the song is sung in the said film in that raga or has been changed to yaydukulalaamboji. Anyhow kindly check this.

While the original 'aliveni' is indeed kurinji, the version in this case is an adaptation which is indeed in Yathukulakambhoji.

If one attributes the song 'janaki jane rama' to kalyani, he will find it difficult to explain the frequent use of sudha madhyama in that song.So, i think it will be more precise to say that the aforesaid song is in tha raaga yamunakalyani.Kindly gather opinions from experts.

Where is the sudha madhyama occuring in this song? Although I do not know the song well, I do not see sudha madhyama occuring, at least in the parts that I know... :-)

sir, I sincerely feel that, in your answer to my queery about the rationality of confining the song 'koothambalathil vacho' to the raga kanada, the statement that the use of sudha dhaivatha is allowed in kanada is erroneous.Your argument that the use of dha2 in darabari kanada is forbidden is absolutely correct.But the use of sudha dhaivatha in kanada is only a light musician's freedom but not allowable according to the karnatic music parlances.Nowhere in the krithis like alaipayude,sree narada,mamava sada janani etc, this swara comes into play.I humbly request you to verify this with the help of experts so that the home page of your esteemed site may not have errors.

Yes, sudha madhyamam is indeed 'poetic licence', but then this is how the format of a raga evolves: subtle foreign swaras (eg., n2 in Bilahari) would have evolved only in this fashion...

sir, The song 'koothambalathil vacho' contains the sudha dhaivatha' and is rendered many a times in the song.So it will be rational to classify this song in the raaga 'darbari kanada, rather than kanada which hardly contains that swara.Infact many composers use the sa ni1 dha1 in many songs which otherwise confine to the domain of kanada.

The acid test of Kanada is prayogaas like 'r2 g2 m1 d2 n2 s', 'd2 n2 p m1 p' and 'g2 m1 r2 s'. Of these, only the last can possibly be confused with Darbari kanada. Further, 'd1' is allowed in Kanda while 'd2' is forbidden in Darbari. This is therefore Kanada. Another example of 'd1' in Kanada is the song 'Poo malai' from Sindhubhairavi (Tamil)

sir, The song 'ithiri naanam pennin" in the film 'Thammil Thammil' is more or less in the raaga aarabhi(though it doesn't totally confine to the realm of aarabhi as most film songs are) in which the swara pattern is clearly rendered in the song which takes the route ma ga ri.The use of anthara gandhara can never happen in sudha saveri.Please correct it.

The song 'sangeethame amara' does not confine to the real bhava of jonpuri(krithis eg.eppo varuvaaro,rama mantramu japiso etc)The song is more or less in the raga natabhairavi. Jonpuri should have the charetiristic pa sa dha route which can not be found out anywhere in the song. regards hari

Pramadavanam veendum - The raag jog in hindusthani music is same as our natta.So it should have it's inherent dhaivatha followed by shad sruthi dhaivatha as well as the rishabha followed by shad sruthi rishabha.This route is not followed in the song.The song can be depicted to the raag savithri(aroh-sa ga ma pa ni sa, avaroh-sa ni pa ma ga sa, janya of harikamboji)with a frequent use of sadhaarana gaandhara. regards hari

Unfortunately, Jog does not seem to the same as nattai (although it seems to have been inspired by Nattai). Jog has a aarohanam of 'S G3 M1 P N2 S' and avarohana--there are different versions--of 'S N2 P M1 G3 M1 G2 S' the G2 being, of course, the same as R3 if you consider it derived from Natta (See 'Pentatonic rags in Indian Music' at http://www.iaahouston.com/art10.html). I'd opine that Jog, as perceived now, has a life of its own that's different from Nattai. In fact, I've also read on the net that Jog = Bhanumanjari, which is incidentally derived from Vagadheeswari (34). Comments on this topic are welcome...

The song 'neanenthu veda' is in the raag karnaataka bihag which has a route ma ga ri ga sa,rather than the ma ga ri sa of harikamboji in the avarohana.please correct this error. regards hari
